Sri Lanka slinger Matheesha Pathirana is unavailable for the third T20I against Bangladesh on Saturday, after sustaining a grade one hamstring injury on his left leg during the previous match. Pathirana observed clutching his left hamstring as he tried to complete his fourth over but was unable to finish his final spell, leading Angelo Mathews to deliver the last two balls.

Matheesha Pathirana

In the recent series, Matheesha Pathirana emerged as Sri Lanka’s fastest bowler, occasionally breaching the 150kph mark. Despite his speed, Pathirana’s performance in the series was a mixed bag. In the first T20I, he conceded 56 runs in his four overs, but in the second match, he made a strong comeback, claiming 2 wickets for 28 runs from 3.4 overs. Notably, Sri Lanka strategically utilized Pathirana primarily towards the end of the innings, relying on his ability to contain runs and pick up crucial wickets.

With Pathirana sidelined due to injury, Sri Lanka has sought to fill this void with a similar style of bowler from their squad. Nuwan Thushara stands out as the closest like-for-like replacement for Pathirana. Thushara also employs a round-arm action, although he may not match Pathirana’s raw pace. Additionally, the squad features other specialist seamers such as left-armers Binura Fernando and Dilshan Madushanka, offering alternative options for the team’s bowling lineup.

As Sri Lanka prepares for the upcoming matches, the absence of Pathirana poses a challenge, but the team remains equipped with talented alternatives to maintain their bowling strength. The strategic reshuffle in the bowling department is poised to test the adaptability and depth of Sri Lanka’s squad as they strive for success in the series.
